It’s all too easy to get cynical about the Honda WRV. You might look at it and go, well, that’s a jacked-up Honda Jazz. With some off-road bits added to it, and strictly speaking, you wouldn’t be wrong. Honda doesn’t have a sub-4 meter SUV, and to fill that gap in the range. They’ve got this crossover.

You should not be cynical about the Honda WRV. Because ever since it was launched in 2017. It has sold in pretty good numbers. And that’s because people see it for what it is—a compact spacious, practical crossover with a Honda badge on its nose.

Exterior – Honda WRV 2022

Let’s have a look at the exterior of the Honda WRV facelift. There is a bolder look on the face. Whereas before, the chrome band on the grille extended wide and joined the headlamps at their base. But the headlamps are now off the LED projector variety with a lot of detailing inside the large units.

The grills beneath the chrome bar have more prominent horizontal slats giving the impression of being larger. And the fog lamps, which are now also LED-powered. And features thicker black surrounds at the rear, not much has changed at all. You’ll find a new design for the 16-inch alloy wheels. But only on the diesel version.

Interior – Honda WRV

Where once again, things are much the same. The Honda WRV might not have the boxy proportions of conventional sub-4-meter SUVs. Thanks to Honda’s legendary interior packaging skills. There’s still loads of space inside the cabin. 

Have enough amount of knee room and even headroom. Again not quite as good as a boxy sub-4-meter SUV. The seat itself is pretty comfortable with good cushioning. But there are a few things I miss back here.

  • Rear AC vents,
  • No charging facilities back here,
  • There’s no center armrest,
  • And headrests are not adjustable and are set very low.

And space extends to the boot. The boot is at 363 liters is more than what you get in any other current compact SUV. And though the back seat doesn’t split, you can fold it down for more luggage room.

The characteristic of this 1.2-liter petrol engine WRV shares, with its larger 1.5-liter sibling that you’ll find in the Honda City. That is why it loves to rev. It is something we’ve loved about iVTEC and iDTEC engines right from the very first Honda City. 

It is almost a shame that the rev counter on this car is so tiny. The needle jumps so fast. Put your foot down, and it races across, all the way to a limiter at 6500 RPM.

While all those revs might feel quite exciting, it does not quite translate to numbers 0-100 kph that come up in 15.1 seconds. That is almost a whole second slower than the BS4 version. The thing is, while that is a lot of fun for most people in everyday driving.

In Traffic

Don’t go chasing after the red line in traffic and the city. You tend to want to keep it in one gear and pootle along. So how does this engine handle that? Well, another characteristic of iVTEC engines is a good amount of pep at low revs and a slightly flat mid-range. And yes, that very exciting top end and all that is characteristic of this engine too.

The trouble is you have to make sure you stay out of that flat mid-range. And that means at path throttle, say when you’re in third gear in traffic, and you want to get a move on you, do find yourself having to shift down a lot.

The short-throw gear lever makes doing that fun. But you miss the effortlessness you get from other engines in this class. And even when you do downshift, things are not always all smooth. 

In the transition to BS6, it seems to have lost some of that lovely low-end pep you used to get. And that’s a shame because you need that when you’re setting off from a set of traffic lights. 

Ride and Handlings

It’s not all bad news, though, because, compared to most compact SUVs, the WRV has one distinct advantage. What enthusiasts will also love about the WRV is that it is a fun handler.

You see, unlike its direct rifles, which are sub-4-meter SUVs, it hasn’t committed to a tall, boxy body style. And thus, it has a lower center of gravity, which only means more fun in the corners. Plus, the bigger wheels and wider tires. Give you more confidence than you’d get in its hatchback sibling, the Jazz.

The only thing I would like was a little bit more weight from this steering at speed. It doesn’t quite weigh up nicely enough as you go faster. But it remains sharp and direct so, lean into a corner.

Ride quality is top-notch. They have nailed a good blend of bump absorption and softness with this car. The Honda Jazz hatchback will be petrol only in BS6 due to the low demand for the diesel variant.

The WRV does sell well in diesel. So they’ve upgraded the 1.5 iDTEC engine to meet the new emissions norms.

In the diesel variant, things are as you would expect. It’s the same 1.5-liter iDTEC diesel engine as before with 100 horsepower and 200 newton meters of torque. So the output numbers have not changed but have the driving experience.

The first thing that catches your attention right out of the door is the noise that this engine makes. Now, there has been a slight improvement compared to the BS4 version. But, you will still hear quite a bit of clutter at idle. And there is a constant drone that you hear as speed climbs up. 

Once you get used to the noise, this is an excellent engine. When it comes to the way, it drives:- 

  • It is responsive right from the moment you touch the accelerator pedal.
  • And it continues to pull to the red line.
  • It is not a particularly explosive or exciting engine but, it is very predictable and very linear. 
  • And because it is so tractable at all revs. 
  • You very rarely feel the need to change gears, even in traffic. So the opposite of the petrol engine then.

Performance-wise the BS6 WRV diesel does 0-100 kph in 13.03 seconds. That is 0.38 seconds slower than the BS4 diesel car. And the difference only grows wider when you consider the in-gear acceleration. And that is not the only number that is not as good as before. 

Honda WRV Mileage

Honda WRV diesel mileage, the ARAI rating for this diesel car is 23.7 kmpl but, that is down by 1.8 kmpl compared to the BS4 car. It is because Honda has used the lean NOx trap method to make this engine BS6 compliant. This process requires a periodic injection of the rich fuel mixture. To neutralize the pollutants trapped in the filter.

The petrol Honda WRV has an ARAI-rated fuel efficiency is 16.5 kmpl, which is 1 KMPL lower than the BS4 version.

Conclusion

As facelifts go then, the Honda WRVs are as minor as they get sure of the new face. And the headlight accents do make it look a bit bolder but, apart from that, not much else has changed.

I do not only mean the way it looks, even on the inside, I wish they had improved things. And maybe add some more equipment, but that has not been done yet. 

More than any equipment, though, the one thing this car sorely misses is an automatic gearbox. And nowadays, when people are opting for that transmission. Moreover, it is a missed opportunity with the Honda WRV now priced from 8.5 lakh to 10.99 lakh

This car is a little bit less than its conventional compact SUV rivals – 

But then it does not offer quite as much as those cars do either. So the WRV then continues to provide what the WRV did before. And, those are strengths of space, and practicality in a relatively compact package. 

With peace of mind, a few fun-to-drive dynamics are thrown in. I, just wish they had taken this opportunity to improve it and make it a more attractive package.

Introduction Citroen C3

The new Citroen C3 is coming to India in 2022. And it’ll mark the french car makers’ entry to the mass segments. In this article, we’ll talk about the key details revealed so far.

Citroen C3 Design

The C3 is under 4 meters in length and has its crossover cues. But Citroen is not calling it a compact SUV. The French carmaker has described the model as a hatchback with a twist.

One part of the reason is that a more upright compact SUV is in the french car makers India product timeline and will follow the C3. 

Best categorized as a cross hatchback. The C3 does have the high bonnet look and elevated seating Indian buyers like. Also, the 180 mm of ground clearance is above the norm for hatchbacks.

Styling would be typical Citroen quirky and cool, even if the split headlamp setup with led DRLs on top. And the main headlight cluster lowerdown. The lights merge into chrome slats at the grill that slickly fuses into the Citroen logo.

There’s an interplay of different colors lower down on the bumper with the aluminum scuff plate. And orange fog lamp surrounds contrasting with the blacked-out air dam and cladding. There’ll also be a customization program for buyers to mix and match colors. In profile, the C3 looks compact and tight. And the creases above the wheel arches add some distinction too.

The contrast roof mirrors and cladding embellishment only help to this end. Cladding aside, the C3 also gets roof rails for that crossover look. Things that don’t work well are the outdated lift-type door handles and slim tires.

The car pictured here features stylized wheel covers and not proper alloys. However, alloys will be part of the options list. The tail end is upright and is home to stylish wraparound tail lamps with light guides designed to replicate the look at the front DRLs. 

The chunky cladding extends to the rear bumper. And the scuff plate is in keeping with that crossover template. Curiously a rear viper is missing from the unveiled car. The final product might get the feature. Boot capacity stands at 315 liters.

Citroen C3 Interior

Citroen’s colorful theme continues on the inside as well. With a bright orange panel running the width of the dashboard. The dimpled effect on the panel is interesting, as are the complex-looking ac vents. A 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring Android auto and apple car play takes center stage on the dash.

There are also nifty clamps to hold your smartphone beside the central and side ac vents in terms of space for smaller items. There are storage bays at the base of the dash bottle holders on each of the doors. And three USB ports, including two at the back, are also included. 

Images also reveal a chunky three-spoke steering and a digital instrument cluster. But on the flip side, manually adjusts for the mirrors, manual air-con controls, and single-piece front seats with integrated headrests. Also, tell you there costs have been saved.

Plastic quality is also something we’ll be able to ascertain only when we see the C3 in the metal. Built on a 2.54-meter long wheelbase. The C3, as Citroen puts it, will offer space at par with the best in the segment. Notably, the rear seat bench’s bolstering suggests it’s been designed for two occupants.

Also, while the C3 does provide rear headrests, they aren’t adjustable. Of the other things. There’s no rear center armrest, and a quirk visible in the pics is the position of the rear power window buttons that sit at the center console between the front seats.

Citroen C3 Engine and Gearboxes

The C3 will be offered in India with a 1.2-liter turbo petrol engine. Expect power to be in the region of 90 horsepower. Before you ask, there won’t be any diesel engine on offer. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

While no other technical information has been revealed as yet, what’s known is that the c3 is based on group PSA’s CMP modular platform. That’ll also be the base of two more mass models from Citroen. Including the aforementioned compact SUV.

It’s also important to bring in that along with South America, India will be the lead market for the C3. the model will be manufactured at the Tiruvarur plant near Chennai. and impressively will start with over 90 localization levels. Citroen is expected to position the C3 quite aggressively in its segment.

Expected Price and Rivals

Coming to this segment. The C3 will rival models like the Tata Punch and Maruti Suzuki Ignis. And it’s safe to assume prices will be in the 5.5 to 8 lakh rupee bracket when the model goes on sale in the first half of 2022.

Here is a car that has been a long time coming, and it is the Audi Q2. And in Europe, it has been around for ages. But, hey, better late than never. It is finally here in India. Promises to offer something truly unique in the luxury car space.

What is it like well, read more to find out? Well, as the name suggests, it is an Audi SUV one size down from a Q3. And if you are thinking, hmm, then what are its traditional rivals, the answer is it does not have any.

It is a small luxury crossover that is 4.2 meters long. It is even shorter than the luxury hatchbacks that used to be, sold here. Like, the Mercedes A-class and the BMW 1 series. The advantage, of course, is that the Audi Q2 offers a higher ground clearance than a crossover. And it certainly is a crossover with a shape and proportions more akin to a high-riding hatchback.

Then a boxy SUV, and while car designers can often get this sort of shape wrong. Audi has nailed it. It also does not follow the design template of its bigger Q siblings and has a distinct style all of its own.

  • The strong shoulder line,
  • Gently bulging wheel arches,
  • Blacked out c-pillars,
  • And raked rear,
  • Windscreen draw your gaze,

It has a wide rectangular nose with plenty of trapezoidal details. Like, the grille, Headlights, And the lower air dam.

A big highlight of any Audi is always its interior.

Now, here on the inside is where this car’s edge starts to show. It is a last-generation Audi interior but is that a bad thing. You see, it’s got a clean design, and it’s of very, very high quality.

The design of the dash reminds you of the Audi TT sports car. With its rotary click to shut vents, the soft feel dash, nerd chrome switchgear. And the general fit and finish are right up there with the bigger Audi’s. And you’ve got to love the snakeskin-like dash trim that lights up at night with the Quattro logo.

You also get virtual cockpit digital dials, which are still some of the best in the business. Thanks to their clean, well-thought-out design. However, this one being of an older generation. It isn’t quite as slick or sharp as the newer versions.

Infotainment System

Forget the fancy dual MMI touch screens that you get in the likes of the A6, A8, and Q8. You get a single screen here, and well, it’s not even a touchscreen. You have to use Audi’s old MMI click wheel. That is an easy interface to use. But you don’t get that wow factor that you get from newer Audi’s.

And while we’re here, a quick word on equipment. While the Audi Q2 does get few important goodies like a

  • Large sunroof wireless,
  • Mobile charging
  • And the aforementioned digital dials

There are some things I feel should have been included in the list like, Powered front seats with heating or ventilation.

Back Seat

The Audi Q2 is not a car for the chauffeur-driven. But you would be surprised to find that there is a decent amount of knee room and headroom back here. If you are over six feet tall, then you should be okay. 

Things I’m not such a fan of are the fact that this backrest is upright. The seat squab isn’t the longest, and the window is high and small. Which makes you feel a little bit hemmed in. But other than that the seat is quite comfortable.

Another interesting points to note are the fact that there are no AC vents in the back. But then this is not a very big car. And though the USB ports in the front are of the standard variety, the ones back here are USB type C.

The boot is well-shaped and easy to load, and you get a decent 405 liters. That is more than enough for a weekend excursion. And so you don’t get stranded with a puncture. There is also a space-saver spare tire well.

You might remember when the Audi A3, Q3, and even the A4 used to get a 1.4-liter turbocharged petrol engine. This one, this smaller car, uses a 2-liter turbocharged petrol engine, no downsizing here.

It seems Audi may have learned its lesson from the last time with 190 horsepower and 320 nm of torque. It’s a familiar engine powering everything from the VW Tiguan all space to the Skoda Superb. But this is stuffed into the Audi Q2 that weighs just 1.4 tons. Well, you’re in for quite a treat.

But before you go racing after the redline, know that this engine is also, really, good in everyday usage. There are that smoothness and refinement that’s typical of a TFSI turbo petrol engine. And the best part is combined with the seven-speed DSG gearbox

It can take on two different characters. Just depending on how aggressively you punch down your right foot. Drive it gently, and it responds in kind, with seamless shifts. And creamy smooth power delivery.

However, in comfort or efficiency modes, the gearbox can get caught out. If you surprise it with a sudden kick down, and it can be reluctant to shift down at times. However, things get a lot more agreeable if you turn up the wick.

Performance

It holds revs to the 6500 rpm redline, and it enjoys revving this engine. There is a lot of performance here. In fact, in a preliminary run with our Vbox testing gear, 0-100 kph came up in just 8.08 seconds. And in the proper testing conditions, we have no doubt it would have been quicker.

And that’s helped not only by the fact that this car has a quick-shifting DSG automatic gearbox. But also because it has Quattro all-wheel-drive. Yes, they’ve thrown everything at the Q2 apart from helping you do quicker launches. Quattro also has its benefits in added grip and particularly on loose surfaces like a rural trail.

And should you encounter a rough road? 

The suspension has you covered. Now, if you go over a rough patch of road. Yes, you can feel a little bit of that firmness that Europeans set up in the suspension. But because there’s enough ground clearance on this car. You don’t mind driving over potholes and bad patches. It gives you a little bit more peace of mind. Even high-speed stability is very good for such a compact car.

And you get that tough germanic feeling of confidence from behind the wheel. But with all that performance, could it also be a fun handler.

Now yes, we’ve said this many times before, but Audi’s steerings are nothing to write home about. and that’s true here too, but this time at least it’s allied to a very, very good chassis. 

The Audi Q2 is compact. The suspension is in European spec. It has not been softened, for India or anything like that. So, there is good body control that means it does not roll much in corners. And you can lean into the suspension in a Bend.

So should you buy one? 

Well, at an expected price of 35 lakh rupees ex-showroom. The fully imported Q2 isn’t for those looking for value for money. It is targeted at self-driven owners. Who wants Audi levels of luxury in a compact package with the high riding practicality of a crossover.

But they will also get an added dose of excitement thanks to the peppy petrol. And relatively lightweight and an agile handler from behind the wheel. Perhaps it could have been better equipped. the interior is showing its age, and some might not like the fact that this is not the facelifted version. That will soon go on sale in Europe. But what you are getting with the Audi Q2 is something truly unique. A new and interesting entry point to the Audi brand that it has no competition.

Conclusion

Do you know what this car feels like? 

It feels like a proper hot hatchback, just one that happens to have more ground clearance. it’s got a 

  • Nice taut chassis,
  • Decent steering
  • It’s got loads of power 
  • And it’s really, really compact

In fact, I’d go as far as saying in the real world on our small bumpy narrow roads. This is the most fun, Audi, to drive.
