Aprilia SXR 125 Engine

Aprilia has made a heart transplant by swapping the SXR 160 engine with a 125 cc engine. It is the same unit that you see in the Aprilia SR 125. That develops 9.52 horsepower and 9.2-newton meters of torque.

Engine Specification:

EngineSingle cylinder, four-stroke
Displacement124.45 cc
Fuel tank capacity7 litres
Maximum power9.52 HP at 7,600 RPM
Maximum torque9.2 Nm at 6,250 RPM
CoolingForced air

Well, the power and top figures are approximately in the same ballpark as other 125 cc scooters. But what seems to hamper the SXR 125 acceleration is its weight.

The Aprilia SXR 125 weighs about 20 kilos more than its direct rival, the Suzuki Bergman street. It is not surprising that the way the SXR 125 accelerates off the line. Does not feel as quick as the other 125 cc scooters.

This power delivery is linear, and speed builds up gradually up to 70 to 75 kph without much effort. From then on, the performance begins tapering, and anything above 85 kph requires a little patience.

Highway Performance

The acceleration of the line is pretty linear. The scooter does not feel like a slouch. And at the same, time it will get up to pretty decent highway speeds as well. It did 92 kph on the highway.

Which is quick enough to keep pace with the rest of the traffic on the road? Since this was a short first ride, we could not conduct our performance tests.

We will be putting the scooter through a proper road test in a few weeks. And that will help present a better picture of its actual performance to ensure that you don’t miss that.

However, there are times when you notice that this scooter takes a little time to build speed. When you are climbing up a flyover. So, I think with two people on board you will feel that lack of power.

What we also liked about the 3v air cool engine is its refinement. Cruising at 60 to 65 kph is a smooth affair, and the engine begins to feel strained over 85 kph.

A smaller engine should also translate to slightly better fuel economy than the 35 KPL that the SXR 160 manage during our test. It is also something that we’ll have to confirm when the scooter comes to us for a full review.

Aprilia SXR 125 Design

Now that we have spoken about the 125 cc engine. Let’s get to the bits that the scooter shares with its bigger sibling. There is no real difference between the Aprilia SXR 125 and the SXR 160.

Aprilia SXR 125 comes in 4 different colors Blue, Black, White, and Red.

  • Aprilia SXR 125 white
  • Aprilia SXR 125 blue
  • Aprilia SXR 125 red
  • Aprilia SXR 125 black

So, visually it is still a very appealing design. It looks wonderful. And it is one of the best-looking scooters you will find in the market today.

  • The design has that typical Italian flair.
  • And the dazzling all LED lights elevate the scooter’s appearance.
  • The large digital LCD instrument cluster is taken off the SXR 160 as well.
  • Now it offers a ton of information like real-time fuel economy, average speed, and more.

However, Aprilia should have gone the whole hog and thrown in Bluetooth connectivity as standard. Given that most 125cc scooters offer the same. Sadly, it remains a 2500 rupee option even on the pricier SXR 160.

Chassis/Suspension:

Front suspensionTelescopic hydraulic forks
Rear suspensionMonoshock

The minor quality-related niggles we found on the SXR 160 continue here as well. The black plastics still feel attached cheap. The storage cabby behind the front apron does not shut flush. And there are uneven panel gaps in some areas that need improvement as before. Aprilia says they are working on sorting this out. And we hope to see improvements soon.

Sharing chassis with the SXR 160 also has its advantages in the form of good high-speed stability as well as sure-footed handling. These breaks are also one of the best we have experienced on a scooter that sold in INDIA.

The braking hardware is identical to the SXR 160. ABS has been replaced with CBS or a combined braking system. And while the handling is good.

Brakes:

Front brakeHydraulically operated 220 mm disc
Rear brake140 mm drum

Tyres:

Front-wheelTubeless 120/70-12”
Rear-wheelTubeless 120/70-12”

Others:

Seat height775 mm
EmissionsEuro 5, BS 6

The trade-off comes in the form of a firm ride over bad roads, although it is not jarring unless you hit a deep crater. That said, pleasant ride quality would do the scooter wonders.

Conclusion

The Aprilia SXR 125 is quite tempting with its lower price point and the promise of better fuel economy.

However, you must consider this for rupees 11000 moreover this scooter. You get the SXR 160, and that scooter not only offers more performance but the safety net of ABS.

So should you consider this scooter over the SXR 160? That is a question that you need to ask yourself.

Still, if you’re looking specifically for a 125 cc scooter with eye-catching looks, decent performance, and the budget being of no concern. You will find the Aprilia SXR 125 to be quite appealing.
